Human Rights Watch: Annual Report – Georgia
On January 20th, the Human Rights Watch published its World Report 2010. The 612-page report, the organization’s 20th annual review of human rights practices around the globe, summarizes major human rights trends in more than 90 nations and territories worldwide. The report covers the human rights situation in Georgia as well.
Georgian NGOs organize round table with international community
On January 15 the South Caucasus Network of Human Right Defenders, NGO coalition – Civil Manifesto and Georgian Young Lawyers Association organized a round table with International organizations and diplomats in Georgia on topic – “Ensuring safer and enabling environment for Human Rights Defenders in Georgia.”
NGOs in Georgia condemn the smear campaign against human rights defenders in the country

Non-governmental organizations in Georgia are deeply concerned by a smear campaign against human rights defenders and NGOs which surfaced in Georgia in December 2009. We are particularly concerned by the fact that those media and political figures used sensitive topics such as the Russia-Georgia war, ethno-territorial conflicts, minorities etc., to manipulate the public and mislead them in respect of human rights defenders and their work.
Georgia: SOS – police attack on Inclusive Foundation
On December 15 2009 the office of the Inclusive Foundation, a well known Georgian LGBT organisation, was raided by the police. They did not wear police uniforms, did not provide a search warrant, did not inform about their identity or agency they represented and did not explain the purpose of their intrusion.
HRHF and HRIDC nominate human rights defender/journalist for Index on Censorship Award
The Human Rights House Foundation and the Human Rights Center Georgia nominates Saba Tsitsikashvili for the Index on censorship award. Saba Tsitsikashvili is a journalists and a human rights defender who lives and works in conflict region.
The South Caucasus Network of HRD makes a special appeal on the International Day of Human Rights
On the 10th of December – the international day of human rights – the members of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders celebrate the progress achieved in their struggle for freedom, equality and justice.
Concerns with pressure on Georgian media
Norwegian PEN, the Human Rights House Foundation and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee are alarmed by the information that representatives of Special Operative Department (SOD) of Adjara region within the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia have attempted to exert pressure and blackmail Tedo Jorbenadze, head of the investigative reporting team of the “Batumelebi” Newspaper. We call upon the Georgian authorities to promptly investigate both this and previous incidents of pressure on “Batumelebi” and to take all appropriate measures to ensure a safe and enabling environment for all journalists in Georgia.
