Ex-defense minister and former interior minister, Bacho Akhalaia, was found not guilty of charges involving exceeding official powers, illegal confinement and torture into three separate cases. However, he remains detained pending separate trial.
Concern Letter of the Human Rights House Tbilisi regarding torture and inhuman treatment of prisoner
The members of the Human Rights House Tbilisi condemn once more the practice of torture and inhuman treatment of prisoners at the penitentiary department of Georgia during the previous government. The fact was confirmed again by the additional video material found out in the special cache in Zugdidi (Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region) on June 17 and 21.
New video material on torture revealed in Georgia
More than 10 persons are detained or wanted by the Ministry of Interior of Georgia who are allegedly connected to the materials found in special cache in Samegrelo on June 17. The materials include video records about physical and sexual violence of people by the police officers.

Opening ceremony of the Human Rights House Tbilisi
Human Rights House Tbilisi is pleased to announce the official opening day of HRHT, which will take place on June 3, at 4 p.m. Official inauguration of HRHT will be followed by a reception. The event will take place at the HRHT premise – Meliton Kantaria 11a, Tbilisi, Georgia.
The Human Rights House Tbilisi was established and registered in 2010. The purpose of the HRHT is to promote and defend human rights and fundamental freedoms and to support the development of democratic institutions in Georgia.
The Human Rights House Tbilisi is a member of the Human Rights House Network, which consists of more than 70 organizations in 15 countries. The members of the House in Tbilisi are: Human Rights Centre (HRIDC), Article 42 of the constitution, Georgian Centre for psycho-social and medical rehabilitation support of Torture victims (GCRT), Union Safari, Human Rights and Conflict Studies- Caucasia, Media Institute.

FIDH and HRIDC Release Joint Statement on Recent Release of Political Prisoners in Georgia
FIDH and the Human Rights Center (HRIDC) in Georgia welcome the recent release of 190 political prisoners under Georgia’s Law on Amnesty , passed on 12 January 2013. We encourage the Georgian government to undertake further judicial reform.

The right to be a human rights defender has been reinforced by the resolution adopted by consensus at the Human Rights Council. The resolution focuses on legislation affecting, restricting and criminalising the work and activities of human rights defenders.
Substantial amendments to the Labor Code of Georgia
Ministry of Justice introduced a new Labor Code of Georgia where substantial amendments are made. New amendments promote protection of employees’ rights and prevent them from illegal dissmisals from work. Though, Ministry of Justice of Georgia did not fully consider some fundamental recommendations of NGOs and Trade Unions while working on the draft. In particular, a new draft Labor Code does not duly envisage women’s labor rights, employment of people with disabilities and their labor rights.
