Azerbaijan – Human Rights Day without rights
Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10 across the world whilst tens of journalists, human rights defenders and civil activists are imprisoned in Azerbaijan. Leyla Yunus and Khadija Ismaylova dedicated their freedom to the defense of others’ rights. Weak evidence in their cases reinforces doubts about political motivation of their charges.
HRHT brief paper for December 10 – World Human Rights Days
Human Rights Day has been celebrated across the world annually on December 10 for 67 years already. It was established to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948.
Human Rights House Tbilisi is glad to join the celebration of the World Human Rights Day because the main purpose of the organization is also restoration of breached human rights.
Violence against women and women’s rights’ year in Georgia
November 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Georgia marks the day together with 154 states worldwide. The campaign first started in 1991 and it has been getting wider every year.
Updated: UN adopts resolution supporting human rights defenders
HRHN welcomes the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the resolution. This will protect, empower, and support human rights defenders, and address the increasingly threatening climate in which they work.
Five Georgian NGOs Appealed to the Justices of the International Criminal Court
With coordination by the Open Society Georgia Foundation, five Georgian non-governmental organizations, among them are three members of the HRHT, addressed their written statement to the justices of the International Criminal Court concerning the commencement of investigation into the war crimes and crimes against humanity possibly committed during the August 2008 war. The statement has been signed off by the Article 42 of the Constitution, the Human Rights Center, the Center for Psychosocial and Medical Rehabilitation of Torture Victims and the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA).
Hard life of veterans
30 families of the veterans, who participated in the military operations for the territorial integrity of Georgia, have been living in the demolished barracks near the Ketevan Tsamebuli Street # 71, in Tbilisi of more than 20 years.
Georgian TV-companies – media or politics
Television is the most available source of information for the population in Georgia because internet does not have national-wide coverage. Role of the television has increased with the approaching run up to the 2018 parliamentary elections. Almost simultaneous closure of several talk-shows in leading TV-Companies Imedi and First Channel (Georgian Public Broadcasting GPB) and ongoing developments about the most popular TV-Company Rustavi 2 caused concern of local and international communities.
UN: Georgia’s human rights record under scrutiny
On 10 November, over 70 States questioned Georgia’s human rights record at the UPR review. Progress in certain areas was acknowledged by most, whilst worries in some key areas, such as gender equality and violence against women and torture in detention facilities, were raised by many, echoing the submissions made by civil society in view of this review.
