Ejup Ganic arrested in UK on Serbia warrant
A member of Bosnia’s war-time presidency, Ejup Ganic, right, was arrested in London on Monday at the request of Serbian authorities. The arrest followed a request submitted by Serbia late on Sunday, alleging Ganic’s responsibility for war crimes related to an attack by Bosnian troops against a column of Yugoslav People’s Army, JNA, troops in Sarajevo at the start of Bosnia’s 1992-95 war.
Silajdzic: Ethnic cleansing continues 15 years after war
As the genocide trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic resumed Monday, March 1st, in the Netherlands, a member of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s rotating presidency Haris Silajdzic (on right) said that, in effect, “ethnic cleansing” continues — 15 years after a brutal civil war there ended.
The UPR: Bosnia & Herzegovina has to improve human rights situation
Late this month Bosnia and Herzegovina was reviewed in Geneva under the Universal Period Review of the UN Human Rights Council. Discrimination, situation of human rights defenders and freedom of expression, status of the national human rights institution, children and women rights, rights of sexual and national minorities, and issues of disabled, internally-displaced and missing persons are some of the issues mentioned. On all these issues, Bosnia and Herzegovina has to improve its situation.
HCHR presented three reports on human rights
Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in B&H – HCHR held a conference last week for beneficiaries of the project ”Civil Society and Local Community” and BH media. HCHR presented three reports regarding their project and organizational activities, and announced their future activities in the field of human rights.
HCHR held fifteenth General Assembly
Last week, on February 11th, the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in B&H – HCHR, organized its 15th General Assembly, where the implemented activities in 2009, the plans for 2010 and the election of the new president and members of Steering Board of the HCHR were among the key topics for discussion.
Wahhabis in Bosnia Hercegovina forbid access to Gornja Maoca for anyone unknown
Wahhabis living in the village of Gornja Maoca near Brcko District, after the police action “Svjetlost” set the checkpoint at the entrance to their village and started legitimating everyone who is unknown to them.
Group of journalists attacked in Gornja Maoca
Around 600 police officers and security personnel of B&H private security companies have started conducting the police action “Svjetlost” (“Light”). The goal of the action is to identify persons who pose a threat to the state security. So far six persons have been arrested, and recently group of journalists attacked.
