Belarusian activist brutally beaten up for national flag
On 19 May activist Andrei Mouchan (right) was severely beaten in Minsk for being out on the street with a white-red-white flag – the Belarusian national symbol regarded as a token of the opposition by the Lukashenka regime.
His appeal dismissed, Belarusian activist resumes hunger strike (updated)
On 18 May the court dismissed a cassational appeal of Siarhei Kavalenka, the activist of the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian Popular Front, who resumed hunger strike on 8 May protesting against his sentence. His wife and cousin had been detained before the trial.
Relatives of the executed demand amendments to Belarusian Penal Code
Liubou and Tatsiana Kavaliova, mother and sister of Uladzislau Kavaliou, who was executed in March 2012, addressed the President of Belarus Aliaksandr Lukashenka and other officials with a question about the articles in the Belarusian legislation, under which the body of an executed death convict is not returned to his family.
Uzbekistan and Belarus among most censored countries in the world
These two post-soviet states are on the new Committee‘s to Protect Journalists (CPJ) list of ten countries in the world where free media is most heavily censored. Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are the runners-up.

On 2 May, on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on 3 May, the office of Belarusian independent radio station “Racyja” in Minsk was searched. The police seized the office equipment.

Appeal for immediate release and full rehabilitation of all political prisoners
Arbitrary detention is used in Belarus against political opponents and persons exercising their freedoms of conscience, opinion and expression. The use of arbitrary detention as a tool of systematic repression of critical voices constitutes a serious violation of human rights as the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention underlines. We urge the authorities of the Republic of Belarus to release all political prisoners and to compensate them for the harm suffered.
