International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society of Belarus
4 August – the International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society of Belarus. On this very day in 2011 Ales Bialiatski, the famous Belarusian human rights defender, was detained in Minsk. On 21 June, 2014 Ales Bialiatski was suddenly granted amnesty and released, but there are still other political prisoners in Belarus, and there is no guarantee that the new political persecutions will not take place.
Discussion on the death penalty in Belarus was held in Vilnius
The participants of the Summer School on Human Rights, which is held every year in the Belarusian HRH, met Tamara Chikunova, who founded the “Mothers Against the Death Penalty and Torture” organization, after her only son was shot in Tashkent.

On June 27, the Barys Zvozskau Belarusian Human Rights House hosted a press conference of Ales Bialiatski, a former political prisoner, Head of the Human Rights Centre Viasna, Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and one of the Belarusian HRH founders. Ales Bialiatski thanked those present for the attention, but repeatedly reminded about the rest of Belarusian political prisoners.
