Mass media freedom ‘hostage’ of official Minsk
Belarusian authorities are still keen on controlling mass media. Printed publications are subdued by a state distribution monopoly. Radio and TV broadcasters are at constant risk of losing transmitting rights.
Amnesty International to Belarusian president: thou shalt not kill!
Republic of Belarus is the only country left in Europe that still conducts executions. Vasily Yusepchuk was sentenced to death by Brest Regional Court on 29 June 2009 for the murder of six elderly women, although his lawyers argue the case against him was fundamentally flawed. On 2 October his appeal to the Supreme Court was turned down leaving him 10 days from that date to apply to President Lukashenka for clemency.

Election Observation Project: Call for Applications

Ministry of Justice promises to revoke article 193.1
From 28 September to 9 October the OSCE conference on Human Dimension is taking place in Warsaw. Amongst other topics Belarusian problems are on the agenda, in particular the question of torture. Representative of the official Minsk declared their willingness to repeal criminal penalties for activities of unregistered NGOs.

Media freedom reforms “much needed” in Belarus
Belarusian “Iron Lady” Natallia Piatkevich who hosted a meeting with a group of media freedom NGOs in Minsk had a hard task to defend the country’s Soviet-style media regulation system. The group, including London Human Rights House’s representative Rohan Jayasekera, yielded to no persuasion: they urged Belarusian authorities to bring the media environment in compliance with international standards.
No progress in relations between civil society and state, says NGO Assembly
