Prostitute with AIDS – a Criminal or Victim?
The case of Elnara Ahmedova – a 17-year-old prostitute with AIDS, caused big reaction within the society. Being aware of her disease, she had sexual intercourse with about 200 men since 2003, two of which have already confirmed AIDS infection. The current arguments are now about if the prostitute is a criminal or a victim of unfortunate circumstances. (11-JUL-07)
AYLU Conducts Anti-Trafficking Trainings for Police
Republic of Azerbaijan Young Lawyers Union is conducting trainings for law enforcement on “Struggling against human trafficking; cooperation between governmental and civil society organization” within the programme of CRS in the South Caucasus on enhancing the collaboration between civil society and governmental bodies on struggling against human trafficking. Human Rights House in Baku Registered
After almost a year of intensive efforts, the Human Rights House in Baku passed the registration at the Ministry of Justice on the 25-th of May 2007. The HRH Baku was registered as a branch of Human Rights House Foundation in the Republic of Azerbaijan Republic.

Problems of Political Prisoners
On 5 July the head of the Human Rights Center of Republic of Azerbaijan (HRCA) Eldar Zeynalov (right) had a meeting with the “AGO” Monitoring Group. The main issues of the discussion were current political situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan as well as the list of political prisoners, composed by the Federation of Human Rights Organizations of Republic of Azerbaijan. Concern About President’s Speech
The statement of President Ilham Aliyev (right) about the prohibition on punishing policemen who committed violence against citizens during the parliamentary elections in 2005 has caused negative reactions in society. The Human Rights House Foundation is concerned with the statement of president Ilham Aliyev made at the Policy Academy on 2 July 2007. HRHF condemns the promise of unpunishment to the police for the violent dissolution of the demonstrations. No Punishment for Violence
On the 2-nd of July 2007 president Ilham Aliyev (right) gave a speech during the graduation ceremony at Azerbaijan’s Police Academy. He said that despite of the permanent international call to punish the policemen, who “had prevented the illegal actions of politicians during demonstrations, none of the policemen would be punished, as they were carrying out their professional duty”. NGO-s Appeal to EU
Over 120 civil society organizations of Republic of Azerbaijan joined to the action of appealing to the European Union about the current situation of human rights and democratic values in Republic of Azerbaijan. The recent cases of pressure on media are particularly emphasized in the appeal, which calls the European Union to take actions during the talks with the highest level of Azerbaijan’s government. The local independent Azerbaijani news agency Turan was awarded the prestigious Freedom of Expression 2007 international prize today in a ceremony that took place in Norway.
