On April 7, 2004 the Moscow City Court sentenced Igor Sutyagin, a researcher from the U.S. and Canada Institute in Moscow, to 15 year in hard labor. Parliamentary Election in Belarus: Forming of Circuit Electoral Commissions

The stage of forming of circuit electoral commissions for election into the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly of Republic of Belarus is over. Only 2,1% of the members of the commissions that are established by local administrations, belong to oppositional parties. The authorities openly ignored oppositional candidates for membership in the commissions. (05-AUG-04)

Azerbaijan: Press Freedom Undermined, reads HRW report

Influential international organisation Human Rights Watch issued its nex t report about situation with freedom of press in the Republic of Azerbaijan in a period of presidential elections of 2003 and the period after. “Azerbaijani government should act now to stop the deterioration of press freedom underway since the October presidential elections”, Human Rights Watch said in its 18 pages of report yesterday. Official tour of the European ombudsman to Kuban

The Russian Ombudsman Vladimir Lukin (picture) and the Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe Alvaro Hil-Robles came with the official visit to Krasnodar on the 23 of July. Kuban is the fifth region chosen by European ombudsman as the strategically important and indicative for studying all processes connected with observance of the rights and freedom of the person in the Russian Federation. AVHRC concerned on suppression on freedom of expression in Azerbaijan

The Baku-based human rights organization “Against Violence” Human Rights Center (AVHRC), which primarily monitors the cases of violence, harassment and torture throughout the country, on Friday appealed to Azerbaijan’s law enforcement bodies to find out and punish the perpetrators of the last assaults on two opposition-minded journalists. (31 July 2004)

CE to aid reforms in Azerbaijan

Reforms in the judicial and law enforcement areas and ensuring transparency of elections will be one of the priorities of the cooperation between Republic of Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe. General Director of the Council of Europe Strategic Planning Department Jean-Louis Laurens visited Baku last week to discuss prospects for cooperation between Republic of Azerbaijan and the CE. Norwegian embassy rejects accusations of project suspension

The project on clearance of oil-polluted areas in Baku suburbs implemented with financial assistance by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry has been suspended, Norwegian Ambassador to Republic of Azerbaijan Steinar Gil told a news conference on Thursday. (30 July 2004)
