Panchen Lama – Tibet’s stolen child

This year marks the 10th anniversary of China’s abduction and detention of the Panchen Lama, Tibet’s stolen child, who will turn 16 on 25 April. On May 14,1995, six-year-old Gedun Choeky Nyima was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. Determined to control religion in Tibet, the Chinese authorities kidnapped this young boy and his family three days later. (20-APR-05)

Rights and wrongs of censoring the far right

Human rights groups and free speech campaigners reacted differently to a call to cut or censor far-right British National Party (BNP) election broadcasts scheduled for 21 April, one calling for straight censorship “in the interests of the viewer,” another urging close review of the broadcast, while Index on Censorship expressed outright opposition. Report on the violations of conscripts’ rights in 2004

Russian human rights organizations presented their report on the violations of conscripts’ rights in 2004. The Russian Coalition for non governmental organization “For a democratic alternative civil service” and The Union of the Soldiers Mothers Committees of the Russian Federation took part in writing this paper based on documented proof. These organizations verified the fact, that in spite of the measures, which the Ministry of Defence undertook, the quantity of the violations of the law rose. (16-APR-05)

Russia: Increasing violations against conscripts

In the Russian Federation, violations against conscrips´ rights increased in 2004, despite measures undertaken by the Ministry of Defence. This is the conclusion from a report from Russian human rights organizations, including the NGO Coalition “For a democratic alternative civil service” and the Union of Soldiers Mothers Committees of the Russian Federation (picture). Mass hunger-strike in Vaukavysk

Almost 40 people take part in the hunger-strike in the town of Vaukavysk. n 29th day of hunger-strike Vaukavysk businessman Mikalai Autukhovich feels quite bad. The state of the health of some other hunger-strikers deteriorated as well. Yesterday one more person joined – Anatol Dzeshka, former worker of tax inspection. (12-APR-2005)

International League for Human Rights condemns the repressions of the protest action held on 25 Marc

On 29 March the International League for Human Rights filed an open letter to Aliaksandr Lukashenka to condemn the repressions the law machinery used towards participants of the “revolutionary” action that took place in the center of Minsk on 25 March. About 2,5 thousand people took part in the action. The police dispersed the action participants several times. Among the politicians who took part in the action there was Andrei Klimau (former political prisoner, now is tried for alleged insult to Lukashenka). (12-APR-2005)

Ceaseless Clear-up

Many Belarusian NGOs have been already liquidated on the initiative of the Ministry of Justice for invented or insignificant reasons. Human rights activist say it has turned into a liquidating organ instead of the registering one. Now the Ministry of Justice proceeds to political parties. At the same time, it continues to initiate liquidation of new NGOs. (12-APR-2005)
