End of state of emergency promises little

About 1,500 reporters marched through Nepal´s capital Tuesday to mark World Press Freedom Day and demand an immediate end to government censorship and the release of colleagues detained since King Gyanendra seized power in February. Index on Censorship’s Rohan Jayasekera reports on fears that the supposed end of Nepal´s state of emergency will not end the repression of the country´s independent media. (03-May-05)

Belarus: Freedom of Press Prize awarded to Alena Raubetskaya

The Press prize of Ihar Hiermianchuk Memorial is awarded by the  Belarusian Association of Journalist (BAJ), Human Rights House Foundation and the Norwegain PEN  to the editor-in-chief Alena Raubetskaya on the International Freedom of Pres day May 3. Mrs. Raubetskaya is being honered for her critical articles in relation to the October elections in 2004 (3-MAY-05).

Belarus: Freedom of Press Prize awarded to Alena Raubetskaya

Kenya: Rights activists want to vote out the government in 2007

Last week, hundreds of human rights campaigners passed a vote of no confidence in the Narc Government and vowed to ensure it is voted out in 2007. They said the Kibaki administration was composed of people who had tortured them. People who fought for the second liberation had been discriminated against in appointments while the few in Government positions had betrayed the ideals of the struggle. (02-MAY-05)

Freedom House: Media not free in Azerbaijan

 Freedom House published its annual report on media situation in the world  for 2004. The report,  Freedom of the Press: A Global Survey of Media Independence provides numerical rankings and rates each country’s media as “Free,” “Partly Free,” or “Not Free.”  Azerbaijan was indicated at 158th place with a status of “not free media”. In 2004, due to the absence of an independent judiciary as well as significant financial pressures, the Azerbaijani press remained dependent on the government and the oligarchs. The New report on the state of human rights observance in Poland!

Since Wednesday, a report is available on the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights website (www.hfhrpol.waw.pl ) concerning the state of human rights observance in the Republic of Poland in 2004. The report was prepared for the European Commission by the President of Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights Marek Antoni Nowicki – the European Union’s expert on Fundamental Rights Issues. OSCE: Impartiality of war crime trials improved

In the most recent report on the war crime trials in Croatian courts, the OSCE mission to Republic of Croatia recognized improvement in Croatian judiciary. This improvement also brings a positive reflect on the willingnes of the Croatian courts to take over some of the ICTY cases, according to the ICTY Completion Strategy. However, the report underlines the neccesity of additional reforms in order to ensure impartial adjudication of war crimes in the Republic of Croatia. (29-APR-05)

Burmese army uses chemical weapons against the Karenni minority

Strong evidence has emerged of the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Burma Army against the Karenni people. A draft report from Christian Solidarity Wordlwide International President Dr Martin Panter presents evidence of chemical weapons use during an incident which is alleged to have happened near Burma’s north western border with Thailand on 15 February.
