Belarus: one more political sentence
An activist of a regional headquarter of oppositional candidate Alexander Milinkevich has been convicted to 5 months of imprisonment. Sergey Liashkevich’s case is the first court case in Belarus with the use of so called ’antiterroristic’ amendments, which were moved to Criminal Code just before elections on the initiative of the KGB. International Writers’ Day 2006
English PEN, the worldwide association of writers committed to promoting literature, protecting writers´ freedoms, and providing a platform for the free exchange of ideas, runs a lively and diverse events programme. Recent events included a celebration of International Writers’ Day, bringing together eight international writers to explore writing, identity, community, and cultural exchange. Sakharov’s birthday – national non-governmental Day of Freedom
On May 21st the Russian Federation remembered academic Andrey Sakharov. An illegal “May-day meeting” was organized near Sakharov’s home-museum and public center, declared by human rights activists a national non-governmental Day of Freedom. On this day the internationally known human rights activist would have turned 85 years old; at the same time the Museum and the center named in his honor, celebrated its 10th anniversary. About 500 people participated in the event, among them well-known human rights activists, journalists, lawyers and politicians. (27-MAY-06)

On the 13-th of May there were held rerun Parliamentary elections in 10 districts of Republic of Azerbaijan. Despite of hundreds protocols on human rights violations, falsifications and irregularities, the delegation of international organizations recognized the May elections “a progress in the voting process” in comparison to November elections. HRW: Poor Human Rights Record
Prior to the April visit of president Aliev to USA, a group of human rights organizations in the Republic of Azerbaijan sent the joint letter to the US President George W. Bush on the poor human rights situation in Republic of Azerbaijan. In addition Human Rights Watch called the US President to urge the Azerbaijani leader to end harassment of the political opposition and to establish the groundwork for legitimate future elections. Pupils, students, teachers, individuals from the world of science and culture, as well as parents have been manifesting their disagreement with the appointment of Roman Giertych, the leader of the radical right-wing party – League of Polish Families (LPR), for this position. The thirtieth anniversary of Moscow Helsinki Group
The May 12th jubilee conference dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the Moscow-Helsinki Group took place in Moscow. The Conference summed up MHG’s activities; current state of human rights in the Russian Federation was also discussed.
