Transmission of broadcasting media outlets in Azerbaijan

The suspension of the ban on ANS TV means local retransmission of the BBC, Radio Free Europe and Voice of America on its FM frequency, 101.7 FM. But ANS TV could be forced off the air again in February if the government reassigns its frequencies. (15-DEC-06)

Tibetan political prisoner in Oslo

The Norwegian Tibet Committee is in cooperation with Amnesty International Norway and the Human Rights House Foundation today hosting the newly released political prisoner from Tibet,  PHUNTSOG NYIDRON. Since she participated in a peaceful demonstration in Lhasa in Tibet in 1989 she has spent 15 years in prison. Today, on the 15th of December, from 11 to 1230, she will be at the Norwegian Human Rights House to share with us her experiences, but most of all her hopes for a peaceful settlement of Tibet. Milosevic trial exposed Belgrade’s role in wars

The trial of Slobodan Milosevic, which ended with his death before a verdict could be rendered, has provided important evidence about the role of Belgrade in pursuing the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today in New York. (14-DEC-06)

ANS is back on air

ANS TV channel, which had been banned to broadcast since 24 November 2006, was allowed to resume broadcasting by the National TV and Radio Council (NTRC). Being explained by the “goodwill of the president Aliyev”, the decision of the NTRC allows ANS to broadcast its previous frequencies until the release of the tender results in February 2007. Participation of ANS in the tender was one of the conditions for the temporary restoration of ANS broadcast. (12-DEC-06)

Amnesty International campaign for prisoner of conscience Kazulin

Yesterday, Alyaksandr Kazulin, leader of the Belarusian Socialist Democratic Party, former presidential candidate, and former rector of the Belarusian State University, who has been in prison since June 2006, ended the 53-day hunger strike he began on October 20. The hunger strike was an act of protest against Alyaksandr Lukashenka´s tenure in power and a demand that the UN Security Council consider the Belarusian problem. (12-DEC-06)

The newly enhanced United Nations Human Rights Council today held a special session on Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, with top officials from Secretary-General Kofi Annan, right, on down calling for immediate action to end the nightmare of civilian deaths, mass rape, millions uprooted, indiscriminate bombardment by Government planes and rebel abuses. International Day of Disabled Persons

On December, 3rd the International Day of Disabled Persons was celebrated in the Russian Federation. In the Russian Federation there are 12.4 million disabled persons, that is almost 10 percent of the population and their number is steadily increasing. In spite of the fact that in 1992 the Russian Federation signed UN documents concerning rights of disabled persons they still live under miserable conditions. (10-DEC-06)

The plight of Mexico’s journalists

Journalists associations have urged Mexico’s new president to investigate the recent murders of journalists in the country. Demanding that those responsible be brought to justice. In the month of November alone, three journalists were murdered, bringing the total number this year to seven. English PEN is among those  drawing attention to the current plight facing Mexico’s media workers.
