The Ihar Hiermianchuk Memorial Diploma “For Adherence to the Principles of Freedom of Speech” has been presented to Iosif Syaredzich, Editor-in-Chief of “Narodnaya Vola”. The Honorary Diploma was founded by the Norwegian PEN-center and the Human Rights House Foundation together with BAJ. UN Human Rights Council opens sixth session
The Human Rights Council this morning opened its sixth session, taking up organisational and procedural matters, hearing statements by the President of the Council, followed by representatives of the regional groups, and an address by the Minister of Justice of Mauritania. Uganda: Army abuses civilians in plan to secure the Karamoja region
Ugandan soldiers have tortured and unlawfully killed civilians during law enforcement operations in the Karamoja region, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today . Wave of liquidations and suspensions of Belarusian political parties
Belarusian authorities have begun preparations for the parliamentary elections campaign 2008 beforehand by liquidation and suspension of the political parties. For the last two months the Ministry of Justice has given warnings to six political parties. While the activity of the Party of Communists of Republic of Belarus was suspended for six months by the Supreme Court, the Labour Party was liquidated and the women’s party ‘Nadzeya’ faces liquidation. Presented draft law against discrimination
The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented today the Draft Law against Discrimination, which was officially submitted yesterday to the BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees, Safet Halilovic, with a proposal for the Ministry to launch the initiative for adoption of the draft law in the parliament. Authorities use new restrictive practices against NGO and media
29-30 August the Foundation to Support Tolerance and the Novaya Gazeta office in Nizhny Novgorod were taken under illegal check by local lawmen. As a result, they seized computers from the mentioned organizations on the pretext of using unlicensed software. The human rights defenders strongly protest against these actions and think that authorities are trying to use any method to paralyze the work of non-governmental organizations and media.
Release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma
This was the demand when the Campaign Committee for Burma (Norway) and the Norwegian Burma Committee demonstrated in front of the Norwegian parliament today, right. The request to Norwegian authorities was to put pressure on the Burmese junta to release all the more than 100 human rights and democracy activists that have been arrested over the last month.
