Release Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma

This was the demand when the Campaign Committee for Burma (Norway) and the Norwegian Burma Committee demonstrated in front of the Norwegian parliament today, right. The request to Norwegian authorities was to put pressure on the Burmese junta to release all the more than 100 human rights and democracy activists that have been arrested over the last month. Sarajevo: Helsinki Committee presents draft law against discrimination

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented today the Draft Law against Discrimination, which was officially submitted yesterday  to the BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees, Safet Halilovic, with a proposal for the Ministry to launch the initiative for adoption of the draft law in the parliament. Constitutional convention reinforces military rule in Burma

The conclusion of Burma’s National Convention on Monday shows that Burma’s military intends to ignore public sentiment and remain in power indefinitely, said Human Rights Watch today. “The end of the national convention heralds neither reform nor change in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar),” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “It merely marks the end of a long, drawn-out chapter of faits accomplis designed by the military to stay in power.” (05-SEP-07)

NDN takes stock on the current situation in the former Yugoslavia

On Thursday 13 September, in collaboration with the Nansen Dialogue Network (NDN) and the Norwegian Peace Alliance, the Norwegian Peace Association will organise a seminar on the current situation in Former Yugoslavia, with focus on the interethnic dialogue-work being done by the Nansen Dialogue Network in the region. UNHCHR issues update report on Karamoja, Uganda

The human rights situation in Uganda´s Karamoja region has witnessed significant improvements over the last four months, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights says in its latest report covering the period 1 April to 12 August 2007. A grade in religion on the school report card

During the current school year in the Republic of Poland, the grade point average of a student participating in religion classes will include the grade from this subject. About 10% (according to the Roman Catholic Church 90% of all students from above elementary school level attend these classes) of students, e.g. grammar school students, will not have the opportunity to change (improve) their grade point average due to the lack of an alternative (e.g. ethics classes). (31-AUG-07)

HRH F joins AI in protest against Kazulin’s imprisonment

The Human Rights House Foundation has sent a protest letter to Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, addressing the continued detention of former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin. Kazulin was adopted as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International (AI) last December and included in AI´s most recent appeals campaign. For previous coverage on Kazulin´s case, click here . The five reasons against – and the one for – registering Viasna

The founders of the public human rights association ‘Viasna’ have finally received an official letter from the Ministry of Justice ‘On refusal of state registration for the public association’. The Ministry lists five reasons why Viasna´s request to be registered has been refused. Viasna comments, giving their interpretation of why the organisation has been denied registration. (29-AUG-07)
