Three years since Belarusian journalist was murdered

Three years ago, 20 October 2004, the opposition Belarusian journalist Veranika Cherkasova was found stabbed in her apartment in Minsk.  Her relatives and colleagues still did not get the clear answer who was guilty in her death. They do not exclude she could be murdered for her professional activity:  Veranika wrote a lot about special forces activity and covered  Belarusian and Iraqi relationships during Hussein period. OSCE Watches Media Situation in South Caucasus

On 11-12 October 2007 in Tbilisi, Georgia, the OSCE Representative for Media Freedom and the OSCE office in Georgia hosted the fourth annual conference on media self-regulation in the South Caucasus. Representatives from mass media and journalism organizations from the South Caucasus participated in the event. At the end of the conference a statement on self-regulation of the press in the South Caucasus was adopted. (17-OCT-07)

Election of the new Ombudsperson in Kosovo lasts

On 10 October 2007 in Kosovo, the Parliamentary Commission for Legislative and Constitutional Matters approved a short list (3 candidates) for the Ombudsperson in Kosovo position. The Parliament will vote over them soon. The same day, Marek Antoni Nowicki, former Ombudsperson in Kosovo, at present the President of the Board of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, sent an open letter to the President of the Assembly of Kosovo, Mr. Kole Berisha, in which he wrote about his concern regarding the current election procedure. On World Day Against Poverty, do not forget the children

In FYR Macedonia 2000 children are living on the streets, only half of them are in Skopje, and the numbers are rapidly increasing. Joining in the celebration of the world day against poverty, October 17, the First Children’s embassy in the world – Megjashi, a member organisation of the HR House project in Skopje, issued a report on poverty and social exclusion noting that children should not be forgiven. Heinrich Boell Foundation Met with Human Rights Defenders

On 12 October 2007 the big delegation group of Heinrich Boell Foundation had a meeting with a group of human rights defenders of Republic of Azerbaijan. The purpose of the meeting was to get comprehensive information on human rights environment in the country as well as get acquainted with the local and regional initiatives of organizations regarding human rights, conflict transformation, civil society building. Human Rights Defenders Participated in PACE Session

The group of 4 human rights defenders of Republic of Azerbaijan took part in fall session of PACE. Having met with a number of representatives from different PACE representatives, the human rights defenders stressed the poor human rights records, especially in the area of the freedom of speech and freedom of assembly. Members of Human Rights House Azerbaijan Participated in OSCE Warsaw Meeting

The annual Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM) 2007 was organized on 25 September – 05 October in Warsaw. The joint statement on behalf of the human rights organizations in the Republic of Azerbaijan on human rights and media situation was made public at the meeting. (08-OCT-07)

A year without Anna Politkovskaya

7 October, 2007 people in the Russian Federation and other countries reversed Anna Politkovskaya`s memory. Anna was a very famous Russian journalist and human rights defender, who opposed war in the Chechen Republic and criticized Putin`s regime. She was shot dead a year ago. In Anna`s commemoration there were held a number of events all over the world. (15-OCT-07)

On 26 September 2007 the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided to hold the ‘European Day against the Death Penalty’ every year on 10 October. However, the Day is not an official EU holiday. An international conference against the death penalty was held on Tuesday 9 October in Lisbon (Portugal) by the Council of Europe, the Portuguese presidency of the European Union and the European Commission. Politkovskaya memorial event in Bergen

Anna Politkovskaya was a fearless journalist who sought justice for victims of human rights abuses through her words. On October 7, 2006, she became a victim herself when she was murdered, many believe, in retribution for her work. Last Sunday on October 7 Politkovskaya was remembered in many places around the world. Rafto Foundation took initiative for memorial event in Bergen. (10-OCT-07)
