Human Rights Day in Azerbaijan

A number of events were held in the Republic of Azerbaijan on occasion of the International Human Rights Day, organized by national and international human rights actors. At all events the poor record of human rights, especially freedom of expression in the Republic of Azerbaijan was a main conclusion and special concern. (11-DEC-07)

From the ashes of the elections – can Kenya recover?

This coming Friday, HRH F co-hosts a seminar with the Norwegian Council for Africa on the current crisis in the Republic of Kenya. Four speakers who have witnessed the country-wide violence, will answer the questions ‘What is the political, humanitarian and human rights situation in the Republic of Kenya now? HRH F protests against enforced psychiatric treatment in Belarus

The Human Rights House Foundation has sent a protest letter to the General Prosecutor´s office, the Belarusian Psychiatric Association and the Ministry of Health in the Republic of Belarus, addressing two cases of enforced psychiatric treatment of two human rights defenders. Unacceptable police brutality against LGBTI activists at CHOGM in Uganda

The Pan African ILGA, a body representing 41 movements of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders and intersexual people in Africa has written to the Commonwealth complaining about the behaviour of the Ugandan police towards LGBTI activists in Kampala during the Comonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kampala last November. Statement of the Helsinki Commttee in Poland

The Regional Prosecutor´s Office in Cracow has undertaken verifying proceedings connected with the publication of the book by Jan Tomasz Gross entitled “Fear”. Prosecutor wants to examine whether the book´s author committed the crime of unjustly accusing the Polish Nation of participation, organization and responsibility for Communist or Nazi crimes (Article 132a of the Penal Code). The Helsinki Committee appeals to state authorities for restraint in taking actions the problem of article 132a is considered by the Constitutional Tribunal. ( 18-JAN-08)

Imprisonment for journalist reprinting caricatures of Prophet Mohammed

Minsk city court announced its verdict on the case against Alexander Zdzvizhkou, former deputy editor-in-chief of Zhoda newspaper. He was found guilty of violation of article 130 part 2 of the Criminal Code “inciting religious enmity” for reprinting caricatures of Prophet Mohammed. Zdzvizhkou was sentenced to three years´ of imprisonment in a medium security prison. (18-JAN-08)

Six years after deportation of the Algerian Group

Exactly six years’ ago, the Bosnian authorities at the time, extradited illegally the so-called “Algerian Group” to the US authorities. Since then, members of this group have been detained in the Guantanamo base prison. (18-JAN-08)

Eight more killed in Kenya’s post-election chaos

Eight more people were killed in Nairobi and Kisumu as police battled with demonstrators on the second day of rallies called by ODM to protest at the disputed results of the December Presidential election. Police shot a man identified by relatives as Felix Okong´o in Nairobi´s Mathare North area in what they said was a confrontation between them and demonstrators. (18-JAN-08)

Criminal case against “Voice of Beslan”

Well-known Russian human rights defenders adressed to Vladimir Lukin, Ombudsman in the Russian Federation, and Ella Pamfilova, Chairwoman of the Civil Society Institution and Human Rights Council of the Russian Federation, with an appeal to express their protest on the fact of prosecutors of Nazran (Ingushetiya) had opened a criminal investigation into the NGO “Voice of Beslan” on charge of extremism.
