Russian authorities want to close journalist union’s head office

The Russian authorities claim to close the head office of the Russian Union of Journalist (RUJ) in Moscow due to violations of fire regulations. In its statement below, RUJ stresses that the claims are part of a united campaign which has been carried on almost one year against the Union, the biggest non-governmental organization in the Russian Federation. The Union has occupied the building since 1980.

UK: extreme but not illegal

13 February, the UK´s Court of Appeal overturned the convictions of five young men charged under the Terrorism Act, signifying a change in how the courts deal with extremism. The main evidence against the five young men was the extremist material they had downloaded and shared on the Internet. They were prosecuted under Section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for possessing articles for the purposes of terrorism. (19-FEB-08)

The year 2007 was in fact lost

Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented their Report on state of human rights in 2007. In the Report they underlined that the delays in implementation of reforms and repeated complication of political relations on ethnic grounds have been the main features of the previous year. (12-FEB-08)

Belarusian youth activists deprived of right to education

Last year numerous youth activists were crossed out from the list of students. This practice still continues. Human rights activists believe that the isolation of an active student and political activist Zmitser Zhaleznichenka by deprival of the right to education and forced recruitment to army demonstrate the real attitude of the authorities to public activists. (9-FEB-08)

Belarusian human rights activists speak out against capital punishment

6 February Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, condemned the recent executions in the Republic of Belarus. Earlier, Rene van der Linden, Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, had also called upon the President of Republic of Belarus to abolish the death penalty. Three leaders of Homel criminal gang – Valery Harbaty, Ihar Danchanka and Siarhei Marozau – were recently executed by shooting. Right, Ales Bialiatski, Vice Chairman of the International Federation of Human Rights. CoE rapporteur asked for releasement of journalists in Azerbaijan

On 07 February Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe Monitoring Committee co-rapporteurs Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Jivkova held a press-conference on the results of their trip to Republic of Azerbaijan. Andreas Herkel emphasized that the resolution of the journalists’ problem depends on the government and especially on the president. (08-FEB-08)
