Kenyan sexual minorities’ rights defender abused, threatened and harassed

Following her participation in the first ever tv discussion on homosexuality in the Republic of Kenya, broadcast 23 August 8 pm, defender of sexual minorities´ rights Pouline Kimani, right, who featured on the programme, has been verbally abused, chased by people wanting to attack her and received written threats. Poland investigates allegations of secret CIA prison on its own territory

Last week the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the head prosecutor of the country is investigating the issue of a secret CIA prison on Polish territory during the period from 2002-2005. Polish politicians had persistently denied the existence of any illegal CIA detention site, where possibly Islamic terrorists were illegally kept and tortured. (09-SEP-08)

Ugandan parliament may pass bill that will challenge President’s immunity

Members of the Ugandan Parliament have been urged to pass the International Criminal Court Bill into law in order to strengthen the justice system in the Republic of Uganda. The local war crimes tribunal being set up along the lines of the International Criminal Court will have jurisdiction to try foreign presidents forcing law makers to ask what would happen to President Yoweri Museveni´s own constitutional immunity from prosecution. The new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, right, in her inaugural speech to states attending the Human Rights Council on Monday, highlighted the need to tackle discrimination and inequality, and urged greater efforts to prevent genocide, which she described as “the ultimate form of discrimination.” (08-SEP-09)

HRHN organisations concerned over trial against NHC’s Central Asia rep.

Organisations within the Human Rights House Network have signed letters to the Ministries of Justice and the Interior in Kyrgyz Republic expressing concern about the trial today against Ivar Dale, right, the Bishkek based Central Asia representative of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC). Dale is accused of working for a non-registered organisation, which according to Kyrgyzstani law is illegal. Read the letters to the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of the Interior. Somalia’s warring parties sign peace and reconciliation accord

NHC’s Central Asia representatives’s court case dismissed

The charges against the Norwegian Helsinki Committee´s (NHC) regional representative to Central Asia, Ivar Dale, right, was dismissed by the court. Although it is still possible that the prosecutor will appeal to the decision, this is a big victory for the NHC. Dale was accused of working for a non-registered organisation, which according to Kyrgyzstani law is illegal.

Kurdish journalist has his death sentence overturned

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) today welcomed with great relief the ruling by the Tehran Supreme Court overturning a death sentence against Kurdish journalist Adnan Hassanpour, right, because of a procedural error. The court decided that the journalist, who had been convicted of “subversive activities against national security”, could not be considered as a “mohareb” (an enemy of God) and sent his case back to the lower court in Sanandaj, in Iranian Kurdistan. RSF calls for his release and dismissal of the case. (04-SEP-08)
