On 18 September in the Republic of Azerbaijan Press Council’s office a ceremony was conducted to distribute special vests (illustrated right) designated for media representative covering mass actions to distinguish them from action participants.  OSCE and IRFS have distributed the press vests to the journalists as well.
      

On September 18, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) and its local Ethiopian organization, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRCO), held a panel in coordination with key Geneva-based NGOs to discuss and analyze the Draft Proclamation on Charities and Societies (the CSO Bill), which will be under review by the Ethiopian Parliament when it reconvenes in October. (20-SEP-08)
 

The Republic of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has released itsa follow-up report on the so-called Mungiki killings, the large scale extra-judicial killings and disappearances that have taken place, predominantly in and around nairobi, but also elsewhere in the country, as the report documents. The report leaves no doubt that the several hundred killings were ordered, directed or coordinated by the top leadership of the Kenyan police, acting jointly with a common purpose. The hate speech and incitements to violently attack the participants of the forthcoming first ever queer festival in BiH has so far been met by the authorities with silence. In three separate letters, to the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Kenya, and Republic of Uganda, the Human Rights House Foundation has expressed its concern today with recent manifestations of intolerance against homosexuals. In all three cases, the verbal abuse and harassment, threats, incitement to violence and unlawful arrests have only resulted in silence from the authorities. The International Federation for Human Rights and its member organisation, the Republic of Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) welcome the report that was released today by the Independent Review Commission (IREC) concluding that the results of the 2007 December presidential elections were “irretrievably polluted”. The “Election 2008” NGO Coalition conducted a seminar on the theme “Public Oversight Mechanisms in Free and Fair Elections: abilities, opportunities and problems”. According to director of “Inam” Pluralism Center, Vahid Gazi (right), the role and influence of mass media during election is weak.      

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) calls on the Chinese authorities to release Dhondup Wangchen, who made a documentary about Tibet, and Jigme Gyatso, his friend and camera assistant. They have been unjustly detained since March 2008 for filming interviews with Tibetans, above all in the Amdo region of Tibet. (18-SEP-08)
