Terror for Russian journalists
Levels of physical violence against journalists in the Russian Federation are intensifying. Four murders at the start of 2009 have been succeeded recently by four more serious attacks. All of the eight victims had been reporting on corruption or criticising local politics.

Military operation in eastern DRC likely to cause widespread suffering
The Congolese government’s UN-backed military plans against rebels in South Kivu are likely to lead to civilian deaths and widespread suffering, international agency Oxfam said today. The warning comes as MONUC—the UN-led peacekeeping force in the Democratic Republic of Cong—prepares to support the Congolese army (FARDC) in a new offensive against the FDLR militia.

Journalists harassed by police while attempting to cover student protests
On 10 May 2009, Radio Liberty correspondent Durna Safarli, “Yeni Musavat” newspaper employees Afgan Mukhtarli and Layla Ilgar, and “Yukselish Namina” newspaper employee Elchin Hasanov were harassed by police when they attempted to cover protests by a group of local youths.
Croatian Parliament owes an apology to public
