Abductions and murders on the rise in both the Chechen Republic and Ingushetia

A new report by the independent Russian HR organisation Memorial on the human rights situation in the Chechen Republic and Ingushetia concludes that the situation in both republics have gone from bad to worse in the last 18 months. More people are getting abducted and killed, fewer dare to report these incidents, and women’s rights are constantly violated, the report concludes. Right, Svetlana Gannushkina of Memorial.

U.S. flag desecration in Poland. Shall Poland protect U.S. flag against desecration?

On August 20, 2008 a legally organized demonstration took place in front of the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw. The aim of this demonstration was to publicly voice their disagreement with U.S. policy and contest the plan to built an anti-missile shield in the Republic of Poland. To be more persuasive the demonstrators (an action was performed by one of them – August G.) burned a U.S. flag. This action was filmed by media and thereafter disseminated through numerous broadcasts.

Two broadcast journalists seriously beaten in Somalia

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) expresses its alarm over aggressive attacks against two broadcast journalists in southwestern Republic of Somalia. Reporter Omar Abdirahman Mohamoud (Jaajaa) and newscaster Sahra Ali Mohamoud, both working for the privately owned Markabley Radio, were seriously beaten last night by four masked Al-Shabab militias.

Balkan in shock: Ratko Mladic at loose

Public in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the region, is still in shock after watching recently broadcasted new video materials of top war crimes fugitive, Ratko Mladic in the special edition of TV political magazine “60 minuta” on Federal Television. The videos broke the rumors that Mladic is hiding in Serbia. He is in fact, not hiding at all.

Azerbaijan: Proposed amendments to NGO law will eliminate NGOs

On June 9 the Legal Policy Committee adopted the amendments to the Law on NGO (Funds). Several human rights organizations are concerned that if the proposed changes are approved, the work of non-governmental organisations in the Republic of Azerbaijan will be severely limited and restricted. 23 organisations call for release of Armenian press photographer
