Concern with denial of registration of Nasha Viasna

The Belarusian Human Rights House in exile in Vilnius (Lithuania) and the Human Rights House Foundation in Oslo (Norway) are deeply disappointed with the decision of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus to turn down the appeal against non-registration of the human rights organisation Nasha Viasna. We consider this ruling a politically motivated denial of the human rights organisation’s right to freedom of association and call upon the Belarusian authorities to abide by the national laws and international instruments guaranteeing such a right.

Discrimination on the ground of membership in a trade union – “Ekotrade” case

The prohibition of discrimination in employment is a basic principle in polish labour law and in the European Union Law (directive 2000/78/EC). “Ekotrade” case is one of the first discrimination cases before Polish courts and it shows how this principle functions in fact.

Supreme Court of Belarus: Nasha Viasna should not be registered

The founders of the well-known Belarusian human rights association “Nasha Viasna” did not manage to get abolished the decision of the Ministry of Justice on the non-registration. The Supreme Court ruled that the Ministry had reasons to deny the state registration to the NGO.

“Наша Вясна” застаецца без рэгістрацыі. У Вярхоўным Судзе адбылося пасяджэнне, на якім разглядалася скарга праваабаронцаў на адмову Мін’юсту ў дзяржаўнай рэгістрацыі праваабарончага аб’яднання. Вярхоўны Суд пакінуў скаргу без задавальнення і не адмяніў рашэнне Мін’юсту аб адмове ў рэгістрацыі арганізацыі.

Rights activist found dead in Chechnya

Less than a month after the murder of one of Chechnya’s most prominent rights activists Natalya Estemirova two more human rights workers have been murdered in the Chechen Republic under similar circumstances.

Free expression organisations condemn Aung San Suu Kyi verdict

Free expression organisations have condemned the verdict against Aung San Suu Kyi and her sentencing to a further 18 months of house arrest. This unjust judgment by a court in Rangoon’s Insein Prison means that the pro-democracy leader will not be able to take part in the country’s forthcoming elections, due to take place next year.

Media Services Act – the statement of Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights made a statement to the President of Republic of Poland regarding the dratf legislation for the Public Activity within the Sphere of Media Services Act. The President of Republic of Poland declined to sign the draft in July 2009.

New law on media: 6 months since implementation

It has been six months since the new law on mass media was enacted in the Republic of Belarus. Belarusian Association of Journalists has summed up the period under this new legislative act stressing both positive and negative moments. Andrei Bastunets, a BAJ deputy chair, thinks that “the new law does not guarantee a proper access to information for journalist and for the society at large.”
