NUSOJ hails UN body for renewing Rights Expert’s mandate in Somalia

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) welcomes with great joy the resolution of the UN Human Rights Council to renew today, Friday 2 October 2009, the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Republic of Somalia, Dr. Shamsul Bari. NUSOJ also calls on the UN body to turn its commitment in the Republic of Somalia into action.

European court condemns the Russian Federation for Chechen disappearance

The European Court has found the Russian Federation responsible for the enforced disappearance of a young Chechen man from the village of Mesker-Yurt, the Chechen Republic, Russian Justice Initiative said today.

Ministry of Justice promises to revoke article 193.1

From 28 September to 9 October the OSCE conference on Human Dimension is taking place in Warsaw. Amongst other topics Belarusian problems are on the agenda, in particular the question of torture. Representative of the official Minsk declared their willingness to repeal criminal penalties for activities of unregistered NGOs.

UN Rights Council should turn commitment into action in Somalia

The East and Horn of African Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) will today call on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to ensure that the recognition shown by Council representatives of the gravity of the human rights crisis in the Republic of Somalia during this Council session is converted into concrete action aimed at ending impunity and establishing a permanent international human rights presence in the Republic of Somalia.

European court condemns the Russian Federation for Chechen disappearance

The European Court has found the Russian Federation responsible for the enforced disappearance of a young Chechen man from the village of Mesker-Yurt, the Chechen Republic, Russian Justice Initiative said today. The case, Amanat Ilyasova v the Russian Federation, was brought by the parents and wife of Musa Ilyasov, who was abducted from his home in August 2002.
