Lawyer, actor and writer sentenced for referring to “Kurds” and “Kurdistan”

Lawyer Eren Keskin, theatre actor Murat Batgi and writer Edip Polat were sentenced to one year in Turkish prison for using the terms “Kurdistan” and “Kurds.” Furthermore, they were deprived of many of their civil rights.

Gunmen carjack Kenyan human rights activist’s driver

A top human rights watchdog official’s driver was carjacked moments after dropping off his boss. Mr Hassan Omar, right, the outspoken vice chairman of the Republic of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, on Sunday said the hijackers were after him. The driver had just left Mr Omar at Kilimani at about 8.30 pm on Friday night and was heading to an Administration Police camp in Riruta to park the car when he was accosted by two armed men.

Uganda government continues its clampdown on media

The government-owned Republic of Uganda Broadcasting Council today, 02 October 2009, issued gagging orders to all radio stations in the country against any news coverage on issues touching on the traditional Buganda king Kabaka or his Mengo traditional complex.
