A verdict is issued against the young bloggers

Today the Sabail District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Araz Huseynov, issued a verdict in the criminal case opened under article 221.2.1(hooliganism) and 127 (inflicting intentional minor bodily harm) against young bloggers Emin Abdullayev (Millli) and Adnan Hajizade. Emin Milli was sentenced to 2,5 years imprisonment and Adnan Hajizade – to 2 years imprisonment.

Obama to visit China: hope for goodwill gestures

At a time when US President Barack Obama is about to visit Beijing, he is urged to intervene on behalf of more than 40 writers imprisoned in the People´s Republic of China. Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders appeal for a goodwill gesture regarding Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen, whose ill health is not compatible with prolonged detention, the Norwegian Tibet Committee reported.

Mexico: journalist murdered “for writing what he shouldn’t have”

ARTICLE 19 calls on the Mexican authorities to fully and immediately investigate the killing of journalist José Bladimir Antuna García, in the state capital of Durango in northern Mexico. So far, nine journalists have been killed in Mexico this year, while eight remain missing and hundreds more have suffered threats or aggressions.

Burma: use of torture in ordinary prisons

According to a statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission, the perpetrators do not discriminate. Victims of torture range from teenage girls to the elderly. -The widespread use of torture not only against political detainees but also ordinary suspects is a characteristic feature of many repressive regimes, – says Inger Lise Husøy of the Norwegian Burma Committee.

National campaign: To us, the crisis is always

Association for Promotion of Equal Opportunities for People With Disabilities – UPIM (APEO) has recently launched National Campaign for Disability Employment, called “To Us, The Crisis Is Always”. The aim of the Campaign is to promote the disability issue in the media and in that way, make the public sensitive, especially employers, to disability unemployment issue in the Republic of Croatia.

Supreme Administrative Court about the role of NGOs in controlling public bodies

On 28 October 2009 the Supreme Administrative Court of Republic of Poland („SAC”) issued a precedent judgment setting out the standard regarding the NGOs’ power to control activities of public bodies with the use of Freedom of Information Act. The SAC declared that the President of the Institute of National Remembrance („IPN”) may not ignore motions of NGOs requesting access to information or explanation of certain actions undertaken by the IPN employees.
