Nurse from Norway goes to Ethiopia

Kamilla Lehrmann (30) from Oslo goes to Somali region of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on her first mission with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). For the next six months she is going to assist people with primary health care in the MSF Wellness Center in the Ethiopian city of Imey.

International Women’s Day: Focus on Tunisia

On occasion of 8 March 2010, International Women’s Day, Norwegian PEN has joined a letter addressed to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay, written by members of the Tunisia Monitoring Group (TMG), a coalition of 20 members of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) and members of the IFEX Gender Working Group to draw her attention to the slander and abuse faced by women journalists and activists in Tunisia.

HIV and serving in the Police force – judgement of the Constitutional Tribunal

On 23 November 2009 the Constitutional Tribunal pronounced a judgement (ref. no. P 61/08) concerning a ban from serving in the Police force imposed on a person infected with HIV. The Tribunal found that the regulation which provides that HIV infection automatically makes any kind of service in the Police impossible is a disproportionate limitation of the constitutional right of access to the public service under equal conditions.

Were secret CIA detention facilities located in Poland?

On 22 February 2010 at 12 p.m. a press conference in The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (“HFHR”) premises called “Were secret CIA detention facilities located in Poland?” took place. It was organized due to new information that two human right groups – HFHR and The Open Society Justice Initiative (“OSJI”) – received from government agency that for the first time confirms the landing in the Republic of Poland of planes associated with the CIA’s secret detention program.

The right to critize – communication of the case Gąsior vs. Poland

On 5 January 2010 European Court of Human Rights communicated a case of Wanda Gąsior vs. Republic of Poland (no. 34472/07) to the Polish government. Gąsior alleged a breach of the article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights (freedom of expression). The application was prepared with help of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights.

UN Human Rights Council: defend human rights defenders!

A resolution on the security of human rights defenders is about to be discussed during the 13th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which started 1 March. First consultations began while the first open meeting is going to be held today. Human Rights House Foundation is lobbying states to defend human rights defenders.

The main individuals in charge of orchestrating the massive violence that followed in the immediate wake of the announcement of Mwai Kibaki’s alleged victory in the parliamentary and presidential elections in the Republic of Kenya late September 2007 were named in a recent newscast on Kenyan tv.
