Who owns the media own the news?
The programme of the conference aims to sum up the performance of the ‘Observatory’ in the past two years of its functioning, in which the project has been focused on acting for freedom of expression and journalists’ independence in the Polish contemporary media. Guests participating in the conference are Polish and international experts on media market and media laws. The aim of this event is to provoke a public debate on how the ownership structure of media influences their current condition in Poland. During the conference we would like to confront Polish experience in the ‘young’ democratic regime with the situation of media market in other countries, both from Western and Eastern Europe (England, Germany, Norway, Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and others.). As a result of the discussion we hope to exchange ideas and good practises helping to maintain reliable and independent media.
Among invited guests, we expect: Jerzy Baczyński (editor in chief if the weekly ‘Polityka’), Leszek Balcerowicz (Civil Development Forum), Mirosław Wyrzykowski (Warsaw University), Bogudar Kordasiewicz (Polish Academy of Sciences), Tomasz Globan Klas (Jegiellonian University), Ireneusz C. Kamiński (Polish Academy of Sciences), Igor Janke (daily paper ‘Rzeczpospolita’), Piotr Niemczycki (Agora SA), Ewa Wanat (Editor ich chief Radio TOK FM), Jarosław Lipszyc (The Modern Poland Foundation), Krzysztof Kuik (European Comission), Taras Schevchenko (Media Law Institute, Kiev), Renata Uitz (Central European University, Budapest), Gregory Schedov (Director of Memo.ru Information Agency, Russia), Leyla Madatli (Media Rights Institute, Azerbaijan) and others.
The conference will be held in Polish and English, simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

On Friday, after the last panel discussion we invite you to stay for the screening of premiere screening of the documentaries related to the freedom of speech in media which participate in this year’s Watch Docs Human Rights Film Festival. Among other films, we’ll present a documentary called ‘The prisoner from Azerbaijan’ directed by Erling Borgen which tells the story of Eynulla Fatullayev, imprisoned Azerbaijani journalist, for whom ‘Observatory’ and other NGOs from the Human Rights House Network went forward with an intervention letter to the Azerbaijani authorities.
