The human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and the journalist for the independent Russian newspaper, Anastasia Baburova, were killed on their way out from a press conference in Moscow on Monday, 19 January.

The murders show again how dangerous the situation of human rights defenders and journalists is in Russia. During the last years several human right defenders and journalist have been murdered, and it is striking that none of the murders have been solved, and none of the people responsible have been brought to justice. By carrying out an effective investigation and bringing the people responsible for the murders to justice, Russia must now show that the murderers will not be left unpunished.

The memorial will also be in support for the human rights defenders in Russia who put their lives at risk by continuing to defend the constitutional government and the freedom of speech.

Amnesty International Norway, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and the Human Rights House Foundation encourage all our members and supporters to take part in this memorial and light a candle and put down a rose in the memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova.

Appeals will be made by:

  • Erna Solberg, Head of the Conservatives, Vice-President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Stortinget
  • John Peder Egenæs, Secretary General of Amnesty International Norge
  • Aage Borchgrevink, Advisor of The Norwegian Helsinki Committee
  • Niels Jacob Harbitz, Project Manager at the Human Rights House Foundation.
  • Ågot Valle, member of SV party, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Stortinget
