Event description

On 28 November 2024, following parliamentary elections, the Georgian authorities suspended the country’s EU accession process. Protests subsequently erupted across the country and the authorities responded with systematic violations.

The Georgian authorities have met protests with unprecedented police violence targeting demonstrators, human rights defenders, journalists, and political opponents, both during and outside the protests. The use of less-lethal weapons in violation of deployment rules has been widely documented. Large-scale repression against civil society and dissent continues, fueled by severe legislative changes that undermine freedoms of assembly, expression, and other fundamental rights.

Evidence shows that these violations are part of a broader State policy of intimidating civil society and anti-government demonstrators. The violations are systematic and involve multiple State authorities. Despite extensive documentation by Georgian and international groups, the lack of effective investigations fosters ongoing impunity and state arbitrariness.
