Crackdown by Belarusian Authorities on Opposition Figures, Peaceful Protestors, and Journalists

Human Rights House Foundation strongly condemns the actions in recent days of the Belarusian authorities to violently suppress peaceful protests, silence independent journalists, and intimidate members of the political opposition. These actions represent gross violations of the fundamental freedoms of association, assembly, and expression and attacks on human rights defenders. HRHF stands with the Belarusian human rights defenders, in calling on Belarusian authorities to respect fundamental freedoms and human rights, in line with Belarus’ international obligations.

Belarusian presidential nominee Viktar Babaryka and members of his nomination group are political prisoners and must be released according to several Belarusian NGOs including the Belarusian Human Rights House and several of its member organisations.

HRC43: Human rights in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea

In a joint statement at the 43rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council, HRHF and two Human Rights Houses highlighted reports that at least 94 people are detained in Crimea for political or religious reasons, including prominent human rights defender Server Mustafayev. Complications for people in the Eastern Ukraine conflict zone as a result of Covid-19 action were also raised.

Crackdowns by Azerbaijan Authorities under the Guise of COVID-19 Response

Human Rights House Foundation and the network of Human Rights Houses express our alarm at increasing attacks by Azerbaijani authorities on peaceful protests and dissenting and opposition voices witnessed since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country. We call on the authorities to immediately cease these human rights violations and for the international community to hold the authorities accountable.
