Concerns with deterioration of freedom of expression in Azerbaijan

34 members of the Human Rights House Network sent a letter of concern to the Azerbaijani authorities today, condemning the unfair sentence of the two bloggers on 11 November and deploring the deterioration of freedom of expression in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Concerns with increased pressure on Azerbaijani NGOs

The Human Rights House Foundation, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, the Rafto Foundation, the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders and the Belarusian Human Rights House in exile in Vilnius are concerned about the noticeable tendency in the Republic of Azerbaijan to put local non-governmental organisations under increased government control following the recent amendments to the NGO law. The amended law allows the government to collect information on NGOs without referring to any specific purpose articulated in this or other laws.

Activist from Ingushetia killed in ambush

ARTICLE 19 is shocked at the killing of Maksharip Aushev, a well-known activist from Ingushetia. Aushev was killed on 25 October in Kabardino-Balkaria, a neighbouring republic of Ingushetia, when his car came under fire from another passing vehicle. Aushev’s cousin, who was travelling with him, was badly injured in the attack.

Concern with denial of registration of Nasha Viasna

The Belarusian Human Rights House in exile in Vilnius (Lithuania) and the Human Rights House Foundation in Oslo (Norway) are deeply disappointed with the decision of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus to turn down the appeal against non-registration of the human rights organisation Nasha Viasna. We consider this ruling a politically motivated denial of the human rights organisation’s right to freedom of association and call upon the Belarusian authorities to abide by the national laws and international instruments guaranteeing such a right.

On the AU Summit in Libya

Between 1st July 2002 and December 2008, Thirty African States took bold moves with the rest of the world when each individually ratified the Rome Statute and expressed to the inhabitants of their respective territories and to humanity at large that impunity had no place any more and each committed through ratification to cooperate with the International Criminal Court in its various requests including arrest and surrender of suspects.
