The Human Rights House Foundation and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee deeply regret the Supreme Court of Belarus’ ruling to uphold the decision of Vitebsk oblast court against human rights defender Leonid Svetsik.

We consider this ruling a politically motivated denial of the human rights organisation’s right to freedom of association and call upon the Belarusian authorities to abide by the national laws and international instruments guaranteeing such a right.

On the international day of justice, July 17, we call upon the Russian authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation of this case and previous murders of human rights defenders in the country. We also call upon the Russian authorities to further ensure a safe and enabling environment for human rights defenders in their country.
