Call for immediate and unconditional release of Ales Bialiatski

On 4 August 2011, Ales Bialiatski, Chair of the Human Rights Center Viasna in Belarus, was detained in Minsk. We see his detention as a direct result of Ales Bialiatski’s legitimate activities in defense of human rights in Belarus. We call upon the Belarusian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ales Bialiatski and to stop the criminal persecution of human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers and activists in Belarus.

Civil society requests dismissal of politically influenced bailiff and school principal

The representatives of media and NGOs expressed protest against the action of the bailiff Giorgi Inasaridze at the round table on freedom of expression held in Tbilisi Human Rights House. According to the participants of the meeting, the bailiff exceeded his authority when he composed the act of administrative violation against the math teacher Lali Kiknadze that gave rise to her dismissal.

Right to freedom of association in Azerbaijan – call for an opinion from the Venice Commission

Fifteen human rights organisations jointly call upon the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to request an opinion of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) stating whether the July 2009 amendments to the Law on Non-governmental Organisations (public unions and foundations), and the new regulations issued on 17 March 2011 in Azerbaijan are in line with the European Convention of Human Rights.
