Ten years since the massacres in Rwanda

On April 6th, a meeting was held in the Rafto House in commemoration of the genocide in Rwanda. Astrid Arne, anthropologist and former aid worker in Burundi, and Laurent Sinamenye, a Rwandan student living in Norway, gave lectures. (20-APR-2004)

The Palestinian Refugees (1948-2004)

 In 1948 more than 900,000 Palestinians were forced to leave their houses,
 by a deliberate mass  expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland.
 Today, there are more than 5 million Palestinian refugees in the world,

Siba Shakib – the author of “Where God Cries”

On the International Women Day, the Iranian writer Siba Shakib visited Bergen as the guest of the Norwegian Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Committee and the “March 8th Initiative” in Bergen. Siba Shakib is the author of a book on Islamic Republic of Afghanistan entitled ”Where God Cries”. The book is a story of an Afghan woman, Shirin Gol, and her experience during the different regimes of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. (22-MAR-2004)

“Renesansa” helps through orthopaedic expedients

Association „Renesansa“ together with “Zene Zenama” and “Korak Vise”successfully finished the campaign named „Modification and addition the statutory code in getting orthopaedic expedients for women operated from breast cancer“. The campaign lasted a few months, and officially finished in the middle of March, when this bylaw was modified by the Government of Sarajevo’s Canton . (15-APR-04)

Travelling Festival “Human Rights in Film”

The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights is organizing its second Travelling Festival devoted to the presentation of documentary films on the subject of human rights. From 31.03 until 02.04 the Festival was held in Bialystok, the largest city of NE Republic of Poland. (05-APR-04)

Women in BiH can not wait any longer

Discrimination upon women still can be felt in BH society. After the Law on Equality of Gender in BiH was brought in 2003, women decided to take a next step and to help in implementation the Law. That is the reason why women’s NGOs gathered on 31-MAR-04 and promoted the brochure – Platform for Women`s NGO Action in BiH. (02-APR-04)

HCHR BiH reacts on the vandalism in BiH

After the conflicts that happened in Kosovo and Serbia last week, reaction spread out on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina sharply reacted on the attacks on religious sacraments in some places in the country. (24-MAR-04)

New complaint mechanism on violations of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights enters into force

On 5 May 2013, FIAN International celebrates the coming into force of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (OP-ICESCR). Under the Protocol, victims of violations of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR), such as the right to food, health, education, and housing, who are unable to seek relief for their claims within their own country, can seek redress at the international level by filing a complaint with the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in those countries that have ratified.
