Reporters Without Borders urges release of Rauf Arifoglu

Reporters Without Borders marked Azerbaijan’s National Press Day on 22 July by calling for the release of a newspaper editor who has spent the last nine months in jail. Rauf Arifoglu, editor of the country’s main opposition daily Yeni Musavat and vice president of the opposition party Musavat, has been imprisoned in the capital Baku since 27 October 2003.  (20 July 2004)

Azerbaijan to expand its Troops in Iraq

 
The Washington Post newspaper quoted the Pentagon as saying that the number of Azerbaijani peacekeepers in Iraq may be increased up to 250 in addition to 150 already in Iraq. (20 July 2004)

Opposition journalist kidnapped

The editor-in-chief of opposition´s daily “Baki khabar” Aydin Guliyev was kidnapped on 17 July by some unknown persons in mask. Reportedly, he was heavily beaten up and later released. (19 July 2004)

Who painted over the billboards with Dalai Lama?

During the night before the arrival of the Chinese leader, Hu Jintao, in the Republic of Poland, “unknown perpetrators” painted over the billboards, presenting the picture of Dalai Lama and the flag of Tibet, along the route of the Chinese delegation. The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and the Students for Free Tibet prepared the billboards. (16-JULY-04)

Norwegian Ambassador under attack

After the disputed presidential elections of last October, the Norwegian Ambassador to Republic of Azerbaijan Steinar Gil has faced vicious attack from pro-government media, government officials and parliamentary deputies of the ruling New Republic of Azerbaijan Party, as a result of his open support for democracy, human rights and tortured opposition figures. Opposition urges new Presidential Elections

Bomb explodes near acting Chechen president’s convoy

Acting Chechen President Sergei Abramov narrowly escaped injury in a bomb attack in Grozny on Tuesday. One person was killed and another two were injured when an explosive device was set off on Tuesday in the Leninsky region of Grozny near acting Chechen President Sergei Abramov´s convoy. Arrested opposition leaders went on hunger-strike

Following the Azerbaijan´s fraud presidential election of last fall hundreds of opposition party activists were arrested or tortured, while some have left the country due to unbearable pressures and persecutions because of the political views. The seven opposition leaders, who are among these arrested people, went on hunger strike Tuesday. (13 July 2004)
