On May 24 Belarusian authorities extended pre-trial detention of several persons charged in “preparation of mass riots case”. Also increasing number of reports appeared about the possible use of torture and other cruel, inhuman treatment of persons detained as accused in the case about the preparation of mass riots and activities of illegal armed groups in the KGB and the Interior Ministry detention centers.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists filed a petition to the Investigative Committee, the General prosecutor’s office and the KGB, demanding to hold a press conference for representatives of the entire spectrum of the media and present official information about the investigation of the “case on the preparation of the riots.”

The first death sentence in 2017 is executed in Belarus
Representatives of the campaign “Human rights defenders against the death penalty in Belarus” reported that the resident of Gomel Siarhei Vostrykau has been executed. His mother received a notification with this information from the Gomel Regional Court. This is the first death penalty in Belarus in 2017.
