“We are profoundly saddened and angered by the murder of Elmar Huseinov” said Agnes Callamard, Executive Director of ARTICLE 19. “He was a man and a journalist of great courage and commitment. Today, the media in the Republic of Azerbaijan has lost an important critical voice.” ARTICLE 19 is particularly concerned with the increasing climate of intolerance against the media, and with the failure of the Republic of Azerbaijan authorities to put an end to these attacks. Azerbaijan: Prominent journalist found slain
Elmar Huseynov, the well-known journalist and the chief editor of opposition-minded MONITOR journal was killed brutally at the entrance of his apartment on Wednesday at around 9:00 pm. Monitor, is a Russian-language weekly and socio-political magazine and critical of the government. The attack appears to have well planned and orchestrated. To light at the entrance of the apartment building was not working, and that several telephones in the area had been disconnected at the time of the shooting. (4-MAR-2005)
Azerbaijan: HRH strongly condemns the murder of Elmar Huseynov
In a letter to president Ilham Aliev the Human Rights House Foundation (HRH) strongly condemns the murder of the chief editor Elmar Huseynov on 2 March 2005 and calls for an impartial investigation. -His death is evidence of the loss of the free media, the human rights defender Novella Jafaroglu said yesterday on the scene of the crime (4-MARCH-05).

Polish defender awarded by German Open Church
The German Evangelical Association Open Church has distinguished Halina Bortnowska-Dabrowska with the Amos Preis award. Bortnowska-Dabrowska is member of the Helsinki Committee in Poland. She was awarded for her long-term struggle for democracy and freedom in the Republic of Poland, commitment in the fight against racism and anti-Semitism, as well as activities in support of the Polish-German reconciliation. Norway earns big bucks on Total Oil’s investments in Burma
While Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik warns private investors against getting involved in Burma (Republic of the Union of Myanmar), the Norwegian Petroleum Fund, a state entity established and controlled by the Norwegian Parliament, has Total Oil, outed on this website last week as one of the worst blind-eye silent collaborators to the Burmese regime?s gross human rights violations, as its biggest investment. “Amnesty International” made a statement to the Russian government
The world´s largest HR defending organization “Amnesty International” made a statement to the Government of the Russian Federation with an appeal to take urgent measures on suppression of the further infringements of human rights in a context of confrontation in Chechen Republic.
