Travelling festivals „Human rights in film” in bloom

UN adopts resolution on North Korea
The U.N. Commission on Human Rights on Thursday censured North Korea for “widespread and grave violations” – including torture, executions and forced abortions – drawing a sharp rebuke from the secretive communist state. The resolution urged Pyongyang to cooperate with its special investigator on the Democratic Republic of Korea. (22-APR-2005)

UNCHR adopts resolution on the DPRK, while China sends 30 North Koreans back
The United Nations on Thursday censured North Korea for “widespread and grave violations” – including torture, executions and forced abortions – drawing a sharp rebuke from the secretive communist state. The U.N. Commission on Human Rights, whose 53 member states are holding an annual session, urged Pyongyang to cooperate with its special investigator on the Democratic Republic of Korea. The resolution, brought by the European Union (EU) and Japan, was adopted by a vote of 30 countries in favor, nine against and 14 abstentions, including South Korea. (21-april-2005)
Dalai Lama at the Norwegian Human Rights House
On 14 June, a press conference with His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be held at the Norwegian Human Rights House. Tibet’s spiritual and political leader has been invited to Norway by the Norwegian Tibet Committee and the Norwegian Parliament’s Tibet Committee. (21-APR-05)

Panchen Lama – Tibet’s stolen child
This year marks the 10th anniversary of China’s abduction and detention of the Panchen Lama, Tibet’s stolen child, who will turn 16 on 25 April. On May 14,1995, six-year-old Gedun Choeky Nyima was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. Determined to control religion in Tibet, the Chinese authorities kidnapped this young boy and his family three days later. (20-APR-05)
Rights and wrongs of censoring the far right
Human rights groups and free speech campaigners reacted differently to a call to cut or censor far-right British National Party (BNP) election broadcasts scheduled for 21 April, one calling for straight censorship “in the interests of the viewer,” another urging close review of the broadcast, while Index on Censorship expressed outright opposition.
