Bird flu reveals further discrimination of Kurds in Turkey

Turkish authorities have done little or nothing to inform the Kurdish population about the bird flu disease, currently spreading across the country. When bird flew was detected in the non-Kurdish western Republic of Turkey last year, however, the authorities instantly presented information on how life stocks were to be killed. Follow-up guidance on possibly infected people was also given. (12-JAN-06)

Humanitarian worker imprisoned in Georgia

On December 27, Georgian authorities sentenced Mahomed Mahaev to three months preliminary imprisonment on suspicion of al-Qaeda-membership. Mahaev is a Chechen refugee and founder of the humanitarian organisation Imedi (‘Hope’) that assists Chechen refugees. Local members of the Human Rights House Network are worried about the serious risk of extradition and torture. (12-JAN-06)

HRH asks Azeri authorities to restore rights striking student

The Human Rights House Foundation is deeply concerned about the condition of the 6 students that are in hunger strike in Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan. Therefore a letter was sent to both the Minister of Education and the Ombudsman, asking for the immediate restoration of their rights to education. After 15 days without food some of the strikers are at the end of their reserves. There are strong indications that their expulsion from university was politically motivated. Read the letters here. The hunger strike of the activists in Baku continues

Baku: The hunger strike of the activists of the youth movements in the Republic of Azerbaijan continues even though some of the strikers have been without food for 14 days. Former PM establishes centre for peace, reconciliation and human rights

Kjell Magne Bondevik, (right, pictured at the opening of the Norwegian Human Rights House, August 2004), until last September Prime Minister of Norway, launched his plans today for an independent centre for peace, reconciliation in conflict-ridden areas and international human rights. Theme Kurdistan: Women

The Norwegian Council for the Rights of the Kurdish People (RKR) has now published its first magazine with a thematic focus. As an ethnic minority the Kurds has been oppressed and harassed, both politically and militarily for decades. Women are especially endangered by violence and harassment in time of war and conflict. This together with the fear for new assaults affects Kurdish women in a special way and this makes out the thematic focus addressed in this new Norwegian publication. Trial of five members of Scorpions unit commences

The trial of five members of the Serb para-military formation ‘Scorpions’ for murder of six imprisoned Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica in July 1995 started the 20th of December before the Belgrade District Court War Crimes Chamber. They were arrested this year and accused of war crimes after the International War Crimes Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague had presented, at the beginning of June, a video showing the murders. Young Hunger Strikers: “We will continue our struggle until our education rights are restored”

The activists of youth movement continue the hunger strike for the 7-th day. The strikers are demanding the restoration of education rights of two students Turan Aliyev and Namig Feiziyev who were expelled from the universities for their political views. Though the health state of the strikers gets deteriorated there is still no official reaction from the side of officials to the action. The Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova visited the strikers on the 31-st of December and promised to make the efforts to restore the students’ rights, but it can be only after the 5-th of January, official working day. The strikers intend to continue the protest action until the restoration of their rights. (03-JAN-2006)
