Old Story – Elections

On the 13-th of May there were held rerun Parliamentary elections in 10 districts of Republic of Azerbaijan. Despite of hundreds protocols on human rights violations, falsifications and irregularities, the delegation of international organizations recognized the May elections “a progress in the voting process” in comparison to November elections. HRW: Poor Human Rights Record

Prior to the April visit of president Aliev to USA, a group of human rights organizations in the Republic of Azerbaijan sent the joint letter to the US President George W. Bush on the poor human rights situation in Republic of Azerbaijan. In addition Human Rights Watch called the US President to urge the Azerbaijani leader to end harassment of the political opposition and to establish the groundwork for legitimate future elections. Protests against the Minister of Education

A wave of protests against the new Minister of Education is sweeping across Republic of Poland. Pupils, students, teachers, individuals from the world of science and culture, as well as parents have been manifesting their disagreement with the appointment of Roman Giertych, the leader of the radical right-wing party – League of Polish Families (LPR), for this position. The thirtieth anniversary of Moscow Helsinki Group

The May 12th jubilee conference dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the Moscow-Helsinki Group took place in Moscow. The Conference summed up MHG’s activities; current state of human rights in the Russian Federation was also discussed. The conference was held under the slogan “United we can’t be defeated!” (19-MAY-06)

The Moscow Helsinki Group celebrates its thirtieth anniversary

On 12 May 12th a jubilee conference dedicated to the thirtieth anniversary of the Moscow-Helsinki Group (MHG) took place in Moscow. At the conference MHG’s activities were summed up and the current state of human rights in the Russian Federation was also discussed. Russian news agency receives press award in Germany

The Russian-Chechen Information Agency (RCIA) will tomorrow, on 19 May, receive one of the Fritt Ord and ZEIT-Stiftung’s Press Prizes 2006 in the city hall in Hamburg, Germany. The prize is aimed at Eastern European media and journalists who are dedicated to independent reporting and who dare to withstand self-censorship. Egypt: Arrests of journalists and campaigners rings alarm bells for free expression campaigners

Several human rights organizations have voiced alarm at what appears to be an escalation of arrests and attacks on journalists and campaigners in Egypt. Prize-winning blogger Alaa Ahmed Seif al-Islam was among those arrested after after protesting against 30 April’s announcement that the country’s emergency law will be extended a further two years.
