USA´s ambassador for war crimes has suggested that people who committed war crimes during the Saddam Hussein era be tried in Iraqi courts. In a letter to the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs the Norwegian Helsinki Committee argues that these courts will not be independent and impartial, and that Norway and other countries should strive to establish an international tribunal for Iraqi war crimes. (30 April, 2003)

According to the letter, the ideal tribunal should be based on an agreement between the UN and Iraqi authorities.
