In the beginning of July 2003 Project Manager Berit Lindeman travelled to Baku to start discussions with human rights organisations about the possibility of establishing a Human Rights House in Baku. Since independence from the Soviet Union twelve years ago, human rights organisations in Azerbaijan have worked extensively through times of war and political oppression. In addition to meeting with representatives of several Embassies, Lindeman met with seventeen different domestic NGOs, international organisations and the Azerbaijan Ombudsman. The response to the idea of establishing a community of human rights organisations was overall very positive. The Human Rights House Foundation will continue its assessment of Azerbaijanian civil society and the formal and financial possibilities of such an establishment.
