Burma´s military junta has freed the student leader Min Ko Naing, the country´s best known political prisoner after Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Min Ko Naing was surprisingly released 19 November as part of an announced release of almost 4,000 prisoners. (24-NOV-04)

The Burmese exile government, the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB), led by Aung San Suu Kyi´s cousin, welcomes the news of the release, but stress that all political prisoners should be released and that the junta should make sincere steps towards a national reconciliation process. Only 28 of Burma´s 1350 political prisoners have been freed as part of the announced mass release.
