November the 18th may become as historic a date for Bosnia and Herzegovina as 30th of April, when the country’s most recent war began in 1991. This time, however, no war is expected to break out. With the anticipated inclusion of other countries in the Balkans, today´s decision may turn out to be crucial for the still on-going peace process in the whole region.

BiH has already undertaken reform processes in the areas of tax and customs regulations, military development and the national public service broadcast. Improvements in these areas were required by the EU. Now that these have been met, the meeting of commissioners is expected to reach agreement on a response to the feasibility study carried out in the wake of the reform processes. On the basis of this agreement, decisions regarding BiH´s potential membership will be taken. The detailed explanation of the  Commissioners´ decision is due tomorrow.

Adnan Terzic, Chairman of the Council of Ministries of BiH said to the Sarajevo daily Dnevni Avaz yesterday that “this decision is of historical importance”. Mr Terzic emphasised that he is not acquainted with the preliminary decision right now, but that he expects it to be affirmative. If the decision is positive, it would accellerate the development of the country´s still fairly weak state institutions.
