In cooperation with Bergen Kunsthall, the Egil Rafto Human Rights House arranges seminars, film viewing and lecture. The theme of these events is in different ways tied to one of this spring’s main exhibitions at Kunsthall, “Time Suspended”. The exhibition, “Time Suspended”, explores the time perspective of refugees’ lives, focusing especially on long-lasting conflicts. (02-FEB-2005)

Seminar: Human challenges during long-lasting conflicts
Participants: Representatives from the Norwegian Helsingfors Committee, Christian Michelsen Institute, University in Bergen and TV2.The participants will discuss the human challenges of living in areas dominated by long-lasting conflict, and how fear can lead to hatred and undermining of identity and human dignity.

The movie presents a shaking image of the situation for North Koreans attempting to escape one of the world’s most brutal regimes. The movie shows the contrast between the slowness of the refugees’ waiting periods, and the short seconds that decide between freedom and captivity, life and death.

Pascal Khoo Thwe – “From the Land of Green Ghosts”
Burmese writer, Pascal Khoo Thwe, visits Bergen to present his new book, “From the Land of Green Ghosts”. While “Time Suspended” focuses upon the suspension of long-lasting conflict, Thwe focuses on Burma’s current situation and the challenges ahead for a people on the run. Pascal Khoo Thwe is currently living in exile in England.
