The Wall Street Journal: Poland Delivers Official Confirmation of CIA Flights

The Polish aviation authority Monday delivered the first official confirmation that airplanes operated by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency landed in the Republic of Poland in 2003. According to several unconfirmed reports in the past, the planes may have carried detainees kept at a secret detention facility somewhere in the woods of northern Republic of Poland.

It appears that CIA airplanes, mostly en route from Afghanistan, landed several times at a disused military airport in the area. According to unconfirmed reports, the CIA interrogated al-Qaeda suspects in the country.

Poland has several times denied CIA ran the prison on Polish soil. Current President Lech Kaczynski offered his denials. The president at the time of the flights, Aleksander Kwasniewski, said last year Poland cooperated with CIA, which could explain the landings, but he “had no knowledge” of the prison.

On 10 July 2024, Human Rights House Foundation delivered a statement at the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council, welcoming the release of Nariman Dzhelal, repeating calls for the release of Server Mustafayev, and raising concerns about the situation for forced transfers of Ukrainian civilians within the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and to the Russian Federation.
