Violations of human rights by the military junta in Burma have been known for many years. Recently however, the suffering in Burma has been given new dimensions. One year ago, the regime violently repressed peacefully demonstrating monks. This year the country was hit by a hurricane and floodings and the military junta added to the suffering by hindering foreign attempts to give emergency aid. The junta has expanded the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi. Few countries in the world have less democracy and freedom of expression.
