The government of Azerbaijan has allocated one million dollars for the countries of South East Asia, hit by devastating tsunamis on December 26, the government press service reported on Wednesday. (12-JAN-2005)

According to the press service, the decision came following instructions by President Ilham Aliyev. The money comes from the reserve fund of the 2005 budget and has been transferred to a special account of the U.N. Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

A government report stresses that Azerbaijan has offered help “despite humanitarian problems caused by the existence in the country of over one million refugees and forced IDPs as a result of the occupation of part of the country’s territory”.
