STRONG Civil Society

Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) implemented the 3.5 year STRONG Civil Society (July 2020 – January 2024) working to strengthen the role that civil society plays in the democratisation processes in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. STRONG Civil Society was co-funded by the European Union and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Building the capacity of the next generation of Council of Europe changemakers

14 human rights defenders refined their advocacy skills and deepened their knowledge of Council of Europe (CoE) advocacy throughout 2023 as part of the Human Rights House Foundation’s Advocacy Capacity Building Programme, co-funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union.

In Search for Solidarity: Connecting human rights defenders in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova

In 2022, 480+ participants new to human rights and of diverse backgrounds from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova participated in the “In Search for Solidarity” project. The project resulted in several joint initiatives and established cooperation across borders as participants explored shared history and challenges together.

HRC53: Human Rights Situation in Belarus

On 5 July 2023, Human Rights House Foundation hosted a side event at the 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Belarus. The event is organised with the financial support of the European Union and is co-sponsored by Belarusian and international civil society organsiations, as well as several state missions to the UN in Geneva.

“Without dreaming big there is no thinking big” – Network workshop on building impactful projects

From 12-15 June 2023, 20 participants from the Network of Human Rights Houses gathered in Vilnius, Lithuania, for “From Idea to Impact”, a workshop organised by Human Rights House Foundation focused on designing and implementing impactful human rights projects. The workshop was co-funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union.

Ukraine: Helping the helpers

“We work with those who provide support to others and we call them ‘helpers’.” As a result of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the country’s population has a greater need for support from human rights defenders, social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, etc. Wika Solonitsyna (top photo), Programme Coordinator and Co-founder of AHALAR (member organisation of Educational Human Rights House Chernihiv), sheds light on how her organisation provides valuable assistance to helpers in Ukraine.
