HRHF joins international human rights organisations led by IPHR in urging the Georgian authorities to halt the extradition of Azerbaijani Journalist Afgan Sadigov, as well as to ensure the protection of him and his family.

In recent months, Serbia has witnessed an alarming crackdown on its civic space. This has unfolded through a wave of arrests, smear campaigns, and repressive tactics aimed at silencing dissent and undermining democratic principles. These actions, exacerbated by growing Russian and Chinese influence, reveal a systematic effort of Serbia’s authorities to suppress civil society and stifle public dissent.

On 2 October 2024, Human Rights House Foundation issued a statement at the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, highlighting the intensified crackdown on civil society in Azerbaijan over the last year, nothing the case of Anar Mammadli as emblematic of the situation.

On 24 September 2024, Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) addressed the 57th UN Human Rights Council session, highlighting Russia’s ongoing assault on civil society and minority groups including the LGBT community and Indigenous groups, as reported by the UN Special Rapporteur. HRHF emphasised that the Special Rapporteur’s work is more needed than ever and urged the mandate’s renewal.

Human Rights House Foundation joins several international civil society organisations, movements, groups and individuals, in highlighting the urgent need to address serious human rights concerns in Azerbaijan in the lead-up to its hosting this year’s United Nations Climate Conference (COP29), to be held in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024.

On 9 September 2024, HRHF and several INGOs wrote to member and observer states of the UN Human Rights Council urging their support for the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Russian Federation during HRC57.

At the 56th UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF) worked alongside civil society partners to highlight the situation for human rights in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and the Balkans.

On the sidelines of the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Human Rights House Foundation underlined several concerns related to freedom of expression in Serbia including Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs), the misuse of the Law on the Prevention of Money-Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism to target civil society organisations, and inadequate protection mechanisms for journalists and the persistent impunity for crimes against them.
